I think with the exception of the lyrical passage "more a BITCH than a machine" ... I kinda dig Tons o' Steel.

Nice harmonic hook in the chorus. Song is in a style that Jerry can work with. Vocal relatively suppressed for a Brenty.

When I'm feeling soft, waxing weepy over my first sojourn In BC, Canda, remembering tooling around Vancouver smoking hash spliffs listening to Go to Heaven on the car stereo---I can kinda handle Easy to Love You or whatever the hell it's called.

He wrote a lot of tunes I liked but that's my guilty pleasure.

I also like "Holiday" by Madonna. What the hell are you gonna do? We don't choose these things. They fu*$%^ choose us.

Gotta say that I always enjoyed Tons of Steel. What is there not to like?

Easy to Love you was big to especially when they brought it back in 90 or 91 or something.

But my favorite guilty please is I will take you Home. Got two girls at home.

FMGP (Favorite Madonna Guilty Pleasure - Borderline. OMFG

MMMMMBop was a good tune too. I wish the Dead had covered both of them. I'm not sure who would have sung lead on Borderline - should be Phil. OF course the whole Madonna Drag would have looked better on Mickey.

I reserve comment on Madonna songs. But I cant believe people are confessing to liking Tons of Steel, because I do too. Always have. Plus I also love Easy to Love You, which I guess is acceptable.

I always hated I Will Take You Home, except for the very first time I heard it before Drums at Laguna Seca '88. Too often it came between an outstanding Space and The Other One. That bit the big one!

But, I have a four and a half year old daughter and one day---one night probably---soon, I know I'm going to find myself singing that song to her, and after she falls asleep I will bawl my eyes out (if I can get through it!).

I hear ya!

syd, i am totally in agreement! i never liked hearing the song at a show (a momentum killer at best) - but with 8 and 7 year old girls - the song just has phenomenal meaning when listening to it at the house. i just love the lyrics and makes me sad that brent wrote it for his little love bug. Can often bring tears to me eyes listening to it now - back then it did for other reasons - lol

It was particularly sad in the winter of his life that Brent sang the song after a terribly acrimonious separation from his wife---no doubt due to his chrnic drug and alcohol abuse. it was weird to hear that song knowing that.

while the rest of the GD were more iconistic (zat a word?)
Brent was the head next door who wore his heart on his sleeve. I could relate to his faults and inner demons.
No "airs" about him. He was the best keyboardist the Dead ever had imo. I think his death broke Jerrys heart. Just a Little Light & Tons of Steel are my fav's of his.

No argument there. Simply the best keys I ever heard with them, particularly in improvisation. He knew when to fold and when to hold'em, when to follow and when to lead. Jerry was never the same after Brent went even though he rallied in '91 I think Welnick's lack of imagination killed the band's spirit but being the band they couldn't be pro-active. Hell, they couldn't even save Jerry, let alone can Vince which should have happened around '93.

There is so much sadness around these guys some times it astonishes me that so much beauty wsa created.

I think the overwhelming sadness was the genesis for all the love and happiness...
"Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile"

Just my 2 cents.

I always liked "Easy to Love You". I liked that video montage they put together for it. It's a good tune.
When did Brent make his contribution to 'Little Red Rooster'?
